The Two Evils

When God placed Adam and Eve in His garden in paradise, He provided abundantly all the needs of their life and happiness. But when they rejected His plain law for their lives and sought another way, they also forfeited His many benefits and it was said unto them...

In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. (Genesis 3:19)

When God gave knowledge of His perfect law to the Children of Israel, He enumerated for them the blessings of abundance, health and peace that would literally overtake them if they kept those laws. He also told them of the poverty, sickness, worry and grief of mind that would inevitably follow disobedience to those laws. Read Leviticus chapter 26 and Deuteronomy chapter 28 for the concise list.

Throughout history men have disobeyed God's laws and have then sought relief from the consequences of their own disobedience! They have attempted to comfort themselves by seeking unto other 'gods' - graven, idealogical and political. Through idolatry of every description men have sought to ease their own corrupt minds and seek some peace from their torments.

They have made sacrifice of their labor and lives unto gods of wood, stone, rain and the elements to seek protection from accident, sickness, want and death - all the result of their disobedience to God's law. They have appointed themselves kings, captains and armies to protect them from loss and plunder at the hands of their enemies. But rarely have any acknowledged that "There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy:" (James 4:12), and returned unto Him.

To do these things is to commit two evils, the original evil of rejecting His way, and the double evil of attempting to enjoy peace and prosperity in spite of your disobedience, as if to say, "I will not surely die".

For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, [and] hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water. (Jeremiah 2:13)

Modern man is undoubtedly the worse offender in this regard, chiefly through his idolatry known as the system of 'insurance'. The evils of this idolatrous system know no bounds and volumes may be written of it, but consider carefully the following simple facts.

Jesus taught the plain and simple truth that when we acknowledge Him as our King and live our lives according to His laws which is His standard of righteousness, all the needs of life flow to us as a result. Those who would live according to His will are therefore instructed to "take no thought for the morrow".

Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?... But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. (Matthew 6:25-34)

But the modern idolatry of insurance institutionalizes "thought for the morrow". The very idea of insurance is "thought for the morrow", for next week, next year and many years into the future, even including care for our old age and burial of our dead bodies!

And all (almost), "small and great, rich and poor, free and bond" trust in the "coverage" of insurance, instead of the secure covering of God's care. This modern idolatry transcends religious and national bounds also, as Catholic, Protestant, Moslem, Hindu, Jew, atheists and even Satanists may have equal access to this altar!

But consider this carefully: If you make an offering to Buddah in the morning to secure good health, then make a prayer to Jesus Christ in the evening to secure good health, will Jesus hear you, and will you enjoy good health? God will not share His glory with another, and He will not be mocked.

If you seek insurance coverage for your health, then pray to Jesus Christ for you health - will you enjoy good health? If you seek insurance coverage for accident, then pray to the God of Abraham to protect you from accident - will you escape accident?

Make no mistake, the plain teachings of scripture cannot be reconciled with this abominable idolatry! They are mutually exclusive. "You CANNOT serve God and mammon (the system of the world)".

Ancient peoples made offerings to images of their gods for health, safety, security and peace of mind. Modern men make offerings to insurance entities for health, safety, security and peace of mind. The former were wood or stone, the latter ink on paper - both are idolatry.

Are you really in good hands?

Are you covered?

Can you say, "I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings."?
